Tracking Conversions by UTM Parameters

Updated over a week ago

InTarget has introduced an updated conversion tracking method that uses standard UTM parameters — allowing for precise tracking of conversions across all campaign steps using familiar analytics conventions.

How It Works

Whenever InTarget sends a message containing a URL, the system automatically appends UTM parameters.

For example:

https://yourdomain.com/landing-page?utm_source=InTarget&utm_medium=sms&utm_campaign=intarget-cmp-19088-1

Here:

  • utm_source=InTarget — identifies InTarget as the traffic source

  • utm_medium=sms — indicates the communication channel (email, sms, push, etc.)

  • utm_campaign=intarget-cmp-19088-1 — links to a specific campaign and step

    • 19088 = Campaign ID

    • 1 = Step ID

This ensures that every visit can be tied to a specific campaign step and message.

Enabling the Feature

Sending UTM parameters is enabled by default for all projects.

If you prefer not to include them in your links, please contact us at [email protected].

Implementation Steps

1. Capture the UTM Parameters

When a user clicks on a campaign link, extract all UTM parameters from the URL —

utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, and any others included.

Save them in cookies or local storage.

These parameters will be useful both for accurate conversion tracking and for external analytics (e.g., Google Analytics, Looker Studio, BI dashboards).

2. Overwrite on New Clicks

If a user clicks another campaign link containing new UTM parameters, update the stored values accordingly.

3. Pass the UTM Parameters During Conversion

Whenever a conversion event (e.g., Deposit) occurs, send the stored UTM parameters along with the transaction or game activity details to InTarget.

The expected payload format for the Product API can be found here:

4. Enable Conversion Tracking in Campaigns

Inside the campaign builder, select the Deposit Refcode conversion event for a specific step.

InTarget will automatically calculate all deposits linked to that campaign and step.

Benefits

✅ Full transparency on which messages and steps drive conversions

✅ Granular performance reporting per campaign step

✅ Compatibility with external analytics systems (Google Analytics, Looker Studio, etc.)
